Treat your skin is as important as what you eat, so it's understandable that you may decide to go organic when it comes to anything that touches your body. The problem is that most people do not know how, where or what to buy when it comes to organic skin care. This article will explain everything you need to know to get started. And check out the video at the bottom of this article on how to choose the organic skin care and organic beauty products.
Knowing what the labels say is the most important part of understanding what happens in organic skin care. You want to try and ingredients you can not pronounce, or have an explanation of their origin beside them in the ingredient list. This will ensure that what you're getting is actually the most natural and harmless as you expect it to be.
Check this site to find what ingredients are in your toiletries. This is one of my favorites, I visit often. You can enter any product or ingredients and check for health problems of each ingredient. Be careful, you can spend a long time here checking out all the beauty products.
Many products now carry the logo "certified organic", proof that all the ingredients have been checked by an organization that provides for them to be organic. This lets you know that the company is honest when it comes to its practices regarding labeling, giving you the peace of mind needed when buying from their brand.

Winter Skin Care Tips new

And 'that time of year again - the temperatures are falling, the snow is falling, the children eagerly awaiting canceled school, and the annoying dry patch over his left eye is back. Welcome back, winter. For those of you who live in areas where you get the winter, you are familiar with all this, including skin problems that pop up! Most of the time it comes to dry skin on various parts of the spectrum dry skin - from annoying patches here and there for eczema controlled horribly that may also require hospitalization (on my rotation pediatric dermatology I took care of a child who is eczema was so bad last winter that he was hospitalized)!
Here are some of my favorite products and how to use them to fight the problems that come with winter skin.

1. Aveeno Skin Relief Body Wash - This unscented body wash (and the brand Target, both of which I used) are ideal for sensitive skin or skin that tends to dry. It does not leave your skin feeling stripped of moisture, in fact I usually feel more hydrated after use! Also still it lathers well. Be sure to keep your showers short and keep the water sweet and not too hot to avoid drying the skin. This tip is always hard for me to follow because I find hot showers incredibly therapeutic, but to reduce the time spent in hot water what I do instead is start very hot shower to get that first effect "ahhh" for a few seconds (or minutes in days particularly difficult), then lower the temperature and wash!

2. Cetaphil gentle skin cleanser - Ask almost every dermatologist face wash what they recommend and that will give you this. Even for my acne-prone skin, I even drier in the winter, and this is my holy grail wash face when I start getting dry skin (* for those who have asked for my usual face wash is this, but You can obtain drying in the winter). This face wash is not stripping, but effectively removes makeup and dirt, and it feels wonderful. I used to use with my Clarisonic brush, but as my time for the AM / PM routine has gotten shorter, I stopped using the brush completely (as I liked) and I still think that washing is amazing alone. Use a gentle wash like this in the morning and evening with warm water, and dry with a clean towel after washing.

3. Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream - Another classic, this cream does not clog pores can be used literally anywhere on the body and does not cause irritation or breakouts. After showering, I dry and immediately apply this to my body. I rarely use it on my face, because I do not need a lot of moisture there, but many people do and swear by it. For those who need more intense humidity, Vanicream is a great option, and also optionally available pump large (super convenient for use, and hygiene)!

4. Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream - Hands usually get worse in the winter - and in particular those of us wash their hands for as long as doctors, nurses, teachers - our hands are usually screaming for help! I love this hand cream - is highly concentrated, so a little 'goes a long way, but as rich as it is, it absorbs quickly and does not leave a greasy residue (so I can not write my pen does not slip long after putting on )! Try to reapply right after washing your hands and pat dry. This can also be used anywhere, but I like to bring the small tube around with me for use during the day. For those with dry fingers so get cracking (especially happens to my patients who already have the habit of nail biting and so they must use their hands all day at work) I recommend using gloves moisturizer at night! After washing your hands, apply the moisturizer, and then go to sleep wearing gloves - this will begin to heal those fingers and keep them from re-break!

5. humidifier - I'm not sure why I took so long to get a humidifier. But I did (N has actually), and I never looked back. I really just broke, and I'm realizing now what a big difference it made! We turn up our medium or high overnight and there down to a minimum during the day, in essence, running constantly. All our nasal congestion (particularly Liv, which is why I initially bought) and a dry throat / sore dropped dramatically (again, something that I am much more aware now that it's broken)! Contact lenses were more comfortable, and my skin was much less dry. I find myself having to reapply my moisturizers more often without it! I would seriously consider investing in one, your skin, sinuses, throat, and more will thank you!

* Update * - I replaced my only broken with this for this winter and we love it. It 'about $ 15 more than our original (the first linked above), but this has some great extras that were worth the price. For one, there is the possibility to disseminate essential oils - this is awesome - it's a bedtime mixture / calming, and I'm thinking of buying this that should be good for colds / decongestion (I have not used so I can not comment on it). It also works as a night light that is perfect for when N or I stumble out of bed to get Elli in the middle of the night for feedings! It has different colors, but you can choose a color and stick with it, or use none at all. And most importantly, it does the job of humidifying the air in our room well.

6. CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion, SPF 30 - This is my PM lotion for my face every day and I like (the evening I use their PM moisturizer). It does its job without breaking me out and I almost feel like I'm glowing! Even if the sun does not feel so warm in the winter months, the UV rays are definitely still harmful, so it is important to continue using a daily moisturizer with sunscreen. With current products I am using for my face (all listed here in this post) I actually found that the only trick that I need to use is concealer under eyes (whole lotion and moisturizers in the world still can not get to sleep) ! You will find the trick unless you use the happier your skin will, in general, in order to find a system that allows you to use less is definitely worth it! I should add that I was for a short time using a low-dose oral antibiotic for my acne (during late summer, when the stress of wedding planning, while on clinical rotations and take care of Liv become quite obvious in my horrible acne light)! Have since been out for a couple of months and I did not have any rockets into this routine (update - it's now been over a year and a half and my skin is still happy about this system)! Especially for those of us with dark spots left by acne before, it is even more important to use a lotion with SPF daily, as every bit 'of the sun may make these patches darker and take longer to fade!

7. Aquaphor - No winter skin care products list would be complete without Aquaphor. I literally a small tube of Aquaphor in every bag I own, and in the pocket of white coat (perhaps a bit 'too much?). I use it all-is the best moisturizer for the lips - but also for Liv and Elli areas diaper (we have a huge pool in the changing table), the dry areas, and even small scratches or irritated areas that need a little ' protection !
That's all! The products that help me get through the winter with the skin healthy and happy! I hope this could be useful for some of you! And, of course, although many of these recommendations are from my experience working in clinical dermatology, none of this takes the place of medical advice real - so make sure you make an appointment with your dermatologist if you have problems with skin winter !

Is Medicine Still Right for Me?

Today I want to touch a subject that I am often asked - especially in person when I have the pleasure of meeting some of you at events (women scream Harvard undergrad who invited me to speak on their way to the panel the success of last month ) - but also in emails from all of you as well. It always has to do with some variation, the medicine is still right for me? Perhaps you are in your first year of college, after completing most of your needs pre med and despite having already taken the MCAT, but now with doubts about a career in medicine. Perhaps you've done the "hard work" to do in med school, but you are in your second year and concerned that you may have chosen the wrong field. This is exactly where I was on my second year of medical school, and I hope that sharing a few tips can help you find with your response to this question terrifying. And for those of you outside of medicine, this post is still fully applies to you, any location where you are.
The most important thing to help you reach your answer is to figure out what is making you have these doubts in the first place. I'll share a bit 'of my experience with this question and some' self-reflection that I did to figure out why I felt that way.
Just around the second year of medicine I hit the "I hate this and I want to do something different" phase of my training. The second year is a stepping stone for students med - gone are the days of family anatomy and biochemistry and genetics that many of us were already largely familiar from undergrad - now it was all new territory. And add to that, we were now facing the first major test for licensing clinic - the almighty Step 1. With all this came insecurity in the face of a greater workload. Not only that, but everywhere I looked, I saw the doctors who were unhappy. I do not know about you, but nothing more doubt upon himself a dream to see those who live your dream unhappy, some even downright unhappy. Demand started to come in my mind - "Why am I working so hard To have that I do not want this?". I struggled with this for a while ', eventually picking up the courage to talk to a few people about it - namely, my mentors doctors and my parents. My mentors all doctors have told me to hold on, and my parents could not understand at all (but fortunately they said that whatever I decided respected). There was a lot of guilt that came with the feeling that way, after all, this is what I wanted all along, right? People would kill to be in my place here at Harvard Medical School. And here I am, to be ungrateful for my blessings. (Looking back, this is a mentality that hurts a lot of people, especially those suffering from depression). In any case, make a long story short, my change of heart and a renewed drive and motivation came from the most unlikely places. A blogger meetup. I finally had a chance to talk to women outside of medicine, and instead of feeling that everyone loved their work, it was discovered that many of them were unhappy or unsure of their work and the path they were on. This was a critical moment aha - the realization that it was not only for medicine or the path I was on, that could happen to anyone, which actually was probably feeling a real normal to have at this stage of life! So I did a little 'more thought, and outlined below you will find the biggest points I learned from this experience and hope can help some of you!
Negativity perpetuates negativity. During this time in my training, but I felt like the doctors I was seeing was miserable, I realized it was as if in search of those doctors. If I did meet a doctor who appeared happy, I assume you were hiding how miserable they were, or that somehow just got lucky - they were an outlier. I would like to read the forum doctors and commiserate other medical students who were considering a career switch as well. This was an incredibly unhealthy habit and led me further down a path of misery and almost encouraged. I was feeding the circuit negativity. When I got out of it, I realized that in fact they were happy people in medicine, and I could certainly be one of them.
The grass is not always greener on the other side. Not only do we tend to see only evil in our current situation, we tend to see those outside of it with rose-colored glasses - everything is good on the other side. We think that if only we were on the other side, everything would be better. Figuring this out was the key for me to realize that I was actually still on the right track. Meeting with other bloggers who were amazing in all the different careers, and to hear what they thought their fields were incredibly enlightening for me. They had all the things that did not like their job and everyone had daydreams of switching fields (and of course this can be prevented because they were all bloggers, and so already had interests outside of their "day job", but I think the lesson is still critical). After meeting with these women I have come to the conclusion that changes lives that the grass is not greener on the other side; the grass is greener where you water it. (I can not take credit for that line, however, but you get the point). So I decided that I would I water my grass, dammit!
We tend to question our way when we are sure of ourselves and our abilities. In my case, it was not just that I was apparently surrounded by people who were where I wanted to be, but unhappy. It 'was, also, that I was finally facing my first big obstacle to medical school (phase 1), where a number (your score) presumably determines the specialties you can get, and therefore your future. This is terrifying. And with that fear came insecurity, and that insecurity, fear of failure. One way that some of us deal with the fear of failure is to stop before we fail. To go on our own to do before being able to understand that we are not good enough. I've been there, and I completely understand. But I also know that the only way that we can really is not looking. I spoke of self-doubt and the feeling that you're not good enough before (see here if you missed that post), so I will not go too much into it now, just to say you do not let the car -doubt get to you . Climb up to the challenge - study your butt off - and the confidence that you are good enough.
This age (for most of us, our 20 years, but can happen at any time) is a time where we are all sure whether we are on track. There is a fear that if we do not hurry and choose a path, someone will choose one for us. And if we have chosen a path, there is the fear that we are engaging in a field (and should not be medicine - this applies to those of you in business, or grad school, or law school, or teaching , any field you choose), that can not be "the right one" for the rest of our lives. Almost every one of us affects this stage, it is normal, that is part of becoming a so-called adults and hoping that somehow we fit the mold we created for ourselves as teenagers. As it feels like we're committing the stem cells down one path to becoming a fully differentiated cell locked into that destiny forever (sorry for the reference of science trivial, I could not help myself) - are not differentiated cells ! We can change at any time, even if it does not seem that now. As you feel like you should have all "set" by the time you hit 30 (or whatever age you choose random), rest assured that most of us are just winging. The best advice I can give is to trust the path that you are on, work hard toward any goal set for yourself (even if you have your little doubt about it), but do not be blind to new opportunities as they pop out of both. Life has a funny way of working for those who make the best.
Finally, do not be afraid to come out of this is what you really, really want to do. I put this as the last option, because I'm not a big advocate of "quit smoking", and I really believe that most of the things listed above are our real reasons for wanting to quit. But, if you have lived this list and really did some self-reflection on why you are not satisfied, and still feel like the medicine (or whatever field you are) just is not right for you, maybe it's just is not . And that's completely fine. It takes a brave person to really see that and act on that, but more power to you if you can. Now I say this with a warning - if you're still in medical school, it's a much easier time to decide to do something different. I do not think anyone would even call it quit. If you're in medical school, however, my advice would be more sincere stick out and get a degree in medicine. It is not necessary to pursue medicine after, but whatever you choose to do, however, you will be a much more valuable and desired with the MD This becomes even more true when it is further into medical school and already accumulated quite a lot 'of debt. More likely than not, you'll find something in medicine that love and decided to stay in it, after all. But some people do not, and that is good. Even when a course change seems it will take a lot of time, as they say - do not give up on a dream (or a new dream) because of the time it will take to achieve it - the time will pass anyway.
I hope to share this might help some of you! I hope to share with anyone you think might benefit from reading this. At the end of the day, if you've decided that you're on the right track, but not necessarily happy, learn to water your grass! Find positive people and happy and understand why they are so. Find something you love, or someone who wants to help, or a problem that needs solving, and the feeling of having a purpose again. And remember to be thankful that you are also able to contemplate your place and potentially change that place - so many people do not have this freedom. I'd like to hear what you think of the post or if you have been in this place before in the comments section!

Spring Nails best

These are two shades I absolutely love right now (as the weather warms finally)! The shades of light mint is OPI's Hula-R IM (and what I have now on my nails) and beige / gray shade is Orly Country Club Khaki.

What colors are you craving this spring?

Mother's Day Gift Guide very

I'm cutting quite close to Mother's Day gift guide my posting so late, but let's be honest, I'm usually a bit 'at the last minute when it comes to things like this! And I'm sure that most of our partners / children / other gift-givers have not been shopping yet either!

Below are some ideas in every price range that she will appreciate. I think it's worth saying, however, that the mother will always appreciate a homemade gift or a heartfelt message as much as any of these gifts.

  1. Instant camera - If Mom has fun taking photos, there is nothing we would like more of an instant camera. This is sold on amazon now! Do not forget to buy the movie that goes along with it.
  2. Scarf - For the mom who loves accessorizing, a beautiful scarf to add to her wardrobe would be greatly appreciated.
  3. Shoes - Most women love shoes. Treat her with a perfect pair for this season - naked with a chunky heel.
  4. iPhone Case - This iPhone case leather is perfect for mom on the go - brings some papers, and the iPhone snaps off easily (with its case). You can also charge your phone while in the case.
  5. Custom Print and frame - N surprised me with a print on canvas customized for Valentines Day and I can not even tell you how special it was. Custom Print and frame will be cherished forever.
  6. French press - For the mom who runs on coffee, its upgrade to this French press. The bonus for me (now that the weather is warming up) - you can use to make delicious cold beers!
  7. DSLR - If the mother is seriously photograph or running a blog, and if you have a pretty good-sized budget;) surprise with a fancy camera. That you love him!
  8. Mug multipurpose - Having coffee and biscuits in the same cup! What a cute idea. And 'mother breastfeeding? Make sure to gift her these cookies breastfeeding together with cup (or my favorite bar hay greek - those peanut butter are sinfully delicious)!
  9. Initials necklace - For the lover of jewelry, give her a necklace with the initials of his children. Each series can contain from 1-3 initial.
  10. Cover - Get mom a nice swimsuit cover-up for the summer. Or for an escape improvised a warm place with a sea view and a lot of drinks with little umbrellas;) You can never go wrong with a holiday.
  11. Hanging plant - For the green thumb, her get a wonderful hook system. I'm a sucker for these.

  12. Other ideas? A gift card to a place like objective can not hurt, but many mothers could still be used for the purchase of household goods and food - not really a gift for her! A gift card to a place that can pamper yourself like Sephora or Bliss Spa will always be appreciated.

How to Start a (Successful) Blog

Just the other day I hit me - my blog has just had his birthday four years last week! I thought that now would be a good time as any to talk about starting and maintaining a successful blog! It 'something I get asked all the time, and honestly something I feel is still a matter of "I-don't-know-anything-about-this-topic". Half the time I feel as if I know nothing about blogging, but when all I ask questions about blogging or talking to friends or family about it that I realized I have a few things to share that can be invaluable for Some of you. Or maybe not. But we're going ahead anyway! I share this as more of a "how I started my blog" post with some tips thrown in for when they are really experienced.

Know your purpose
I would say that first of all, to know why you want to start a blog. If it comes to making money, I recommend pursuing a different hobby, how to make money through a blog really takes a huge amount of time (and money) in investments. Unless of course you already have a high quality camera DSLR, laptop, photographer, affiliate marketing, and large community of followers, etc. (which most of us do not do it for a lot 'of time). So, apart from the unrealistic expectation of making money quickly, you still want to start a blog? Understanding why. Is it because you love to cook and want to share recipes? Is it because you have to overcome some obstacles and want to share your story with others who may be going through it right now? It's because you love fashion projects or do it yourself? Whatever it is, try to get a good grasp on it, as this will also help not only concentrate your posts at first, but will also help you identify your blogging community.

Find a platform that works for you
I run my blog with Blogger (hence the bit .blogspot the end of my web address). I did buy the actual domain name for my website (alittlebitoflacquer.com), but have yet to transfer things. I thought it was a necessary part of having a successful blog, but it turns out that it's not really. So I have not really gotten around to it yet. I decided on Blogger mainly because there were no initial costs, it was relatively easy to see how to create places, and when I started, there was a large community with Blogger. I still think it's a great platform and will probably continue to use it because I do not really have time to switch to something different, but a platform that is gaining a lot of traction lately and really makes beautiful websites is Squarespace. I like the blog of Elle for his advice on Squarespace, I certainly toyed with the idea of switching thanks to you! Wordpress is the other big name when it comes to creating your own blog, and most of the big time bloggers swear by it. It has a lot of power and plug in for everything imaginable (in practice that lets you design your blog really the way you want it) - but for me it was too overwhelming. Some people, like Tumblr, but "blogs" are a whole different breed Tumblr blog (more like blogging) - essentially all photo-based, and not necessarily the kind of blog that I'm talking about in this post. I honestly believe if I were starting a blog now I would go with Squarespace (did not exist when I started).

Invest in a good web design clean and photos
As for my current web design, I always bought pre-made templates Etsy shops (here and here are some favorites - the shop that made my blog current design is unfortunately now closed). Although I did not want to spend too much in advance the money on something that was just a hobby, the models can be super expensive and really change the whole feel of your blog. As the blog has evolved I moved to designs cleaner and cleaner that I love. Other things to look for when buying a model? I like header float - as you scroll down on my blog in the top menu comes down with it. Ensure that include customized social media buttons (most do now) and the instructions for installation. For my first couple of models that the designers had purchased them from their installation for me, for my most recent that I chose one that I could install myself (with instructions awesome course) that allowed me to personalize my menu and other things using a little 'of html. As you get more comfortable with blogging and a few pieces of html here and there you'll really appreciate the opportunity to change things on your own as you need!

The photos are a huge part of blogging, and learn a bit 'of good photography and developing an eye for good pictures will help you develop a strong following! About a year and a half into blogging I finally asked for a DSLR for Christmas and was so happy to be able to step my game up pictures (I use this camera). Regardless of your camera, try taking beautiful, sharp images with natural light (still the best). Many bloggers use Photoshop for editing that has tons of features and capabilities, in the end I'd like to learn how to use it, but for the last four years I used Picasa is a free download and allows for simple changes and creating collages (like the one I created here).

Find your voice
Ok, so you've signed up for a blog and also installed a new beautifully designed blog. Now, what really after? In principle, it depends on the purpose of your blog. For myself, I started with fashion, interior design, and recipes (blog overall lifestyle). Write messages as if you have a huge audience to read even if you do not. Once you start building a community (see below) and get feedback from them, and the statistics, you'll start to learn what they like and how to find your blog more useful. With this blog, although I still classify as a blog lifestyle and still: Fashion and recipes, which now includes much more "med school" than I ever thought it would, and that because of all that and this amazing community! I discovered that my blog can be very helpful when I include pieces of me enjoying my life, but even more important when I show that I am doing this while pursuing the rigorous training involved to become a doctor, and help those of you who want to pursue something similar along the way. This blog has become something much more powerful than I ever imagined and I have you all to thank you for helping me find my voice.

Building a community
One of the best parts of blogging (and why most of us start in the first place) is to connect with people who have similar interests or are going through similar life experiences. Whatever it is, I can almost guarantee that you will find a community on the internet! Sometimes this can be a bad thing (that troll the Internet), but for the most part find an online community is amazing! So how do you find it? Search online for blogs that interest you - chances are if you started a blog you can already following some - comments those blogs! And please, do not just write "great post" or "come check out my blog," write something that actually means something, showing the blogger your piece really resonated with them! It does not hurt to include your website at the bottom so that they can find, but just make sure to leave a genuine comment! Do this for many blogs as you like, whenever you like, and you will soon find people who comment on your blog as well. Many blogs also host link up, which is another great way to meet other bloggers - some for fashion, food, ideas do it yourself, you name it! Once you find the interaction that appeals to you the most stick with it! Early in the life of my blog I did a lot of comments on the blog, but now find other bloggers through Instagram it is actually easier for me, just find the one that works for you!

Pay attention to your stats
At the beginning, it probably will not have much to see what the statistics. I remember looking at my stats page on Blogspot and seeing that I was 12 page views and then remembering that I was probably 10 of them. And my mother was probably the other 2. But then I'd start getting page views from Virginia or New York and get so excited! Once the excitement wears off a bit ', start paying attention to what viewers are doing on your website, and what brings them there. I certainly had more visits when I attended up links on other blogs, but this does not always gain new followers. I started to realize that my most popular posts were posts life / advice, then even if I did not initially intend to it, I started including most of those messages on your blog. Instagram is currently my biggest source of traffic (other than Google), so be sure to keep the social media outlet most up-to-date. Pinterest is another great traffic generator, but because it's all based on the image, it will only bring traffic if you have quality images! Another reason to look your best to start taking good photographs.

Listen to your readers
Along the same lines, when you start getting followers and comments from readers, listen! Hopefully that will see them as a community and not as a "result", and treat them as such! This does not mean you have to write each post based on what they say (there are still a lot of things I asked that they never made it to the blog!) But it means paying attention to what I'm curious about. If you are a budget of fashion bloggers and people are always asking how to find your offers, you would probably make a great post! If you are a blogger mom and a couple of other bloggers have asked how you're coping with the transition from a crib to a bed, it would probably help out a few (one ton) of other moms too! Although blogging is not necessarily like running a shop, I like to think of it this way - if you're offering apples and oranges for sale, and people are buying all the apples, you offer more apples, right? And if you have something similar to apples you could also start offering this and see what people think, maybe it would be interested in that too! Ok maybe an analogy horribly, but I hope you get my point!

Try to post regularly
At first, this is easy, but as life gets hectic and things get busy it's all too easy to stop posting all together and let your blog wither and turn to dust. This is the fate of most blogs. I certainly can not preach the gospel of a program of regular posting, because I do not follow one, but I can say is that it is really a great idea. I think 1-2 posts a week is perfect for someone just starting out. If you have other ideas, which is great, write them! But then save them as drafts for later, it is always nice to have a quota of posts for the times when you are too busy to take pictures or come up with something to write. At the moment I try to keep myself accountable for 2-3 seats per month, which is certainly less than when I started, but it's a good balance for now! It also depends on what you're sending - a post every day dress may take 10-15 minutes to throw together a collage of gift ideas may take 1-2 hours, and a longer post as this may take a few days to put together! So keep that in mind as well when you are thinking about how you want to publish regularly.

Fun
I think this goes without saying, but make sure you enjoy it. Once you have found your voice and your niche blogging is really a wonderful hobby. When you stop to feel fun or feels more like sharing online, think about why, and what you can change if anything, but if it's time to hang your hat blogging may just be time to hang your hat blogging! There is nothing wrong with that either.

I hope that if you're interested in starting a blog post this may have helped a little '! Feel free to ask any questions in the comments section below!

Back to (Med) School Shopping

While back to school season approaches (or perhaps we are already in it? I've lost count now that I'm out of it), I always get a bit 'of nostalgia back to school shopping. It 'was always my favorite time of year - the internal organizer-junkie in me loved to buy notebooks and pens and markers and designers, and the clothes always had too much fun! For those of you who are heading into medical school (congratulations !!) I drew a small list of needs (and some not-so-need) to start the year off right! These certainly can work for any school or work environment, and not only medicine!

To begin with - what to wear. I like to keep things simple, so we decided to show you how to combine the same for the upper class, clinic, or lanes easily. Easy t-shirts like this can be dressed with a skirt or down with jeans and really work for any occasion I, of course, make the disclaimer that you should always make sure that you know the dress code in your school and hospital. For us HMS you can wear whatever he wanted in the classroom, so a pair of jeans casual distressed as these were just fine, but in some schools that can not pass. The same applies to the hospital, in most hospitals I worked in wearing a t-shirt with funds stain is completely acceptable (and the norm in terms of medicine), in particular with white coat thrown on top. In RUP this is a big no-no even if (only top scrub and scrub less allowed), and in some places if you are not in the long call or scrub at night are not allowed at all (and are expected to dress more like you would for clinic). I hope this makes sense!

I chose some apartments of fun for the classroom and the clinic (black and tan are virtually the only two colors you need), and for the hospital I converted the tribes Dansko. Especially now that I'm spending more time standing these do not really make a big difference (as do compression stockings)!

One of the most important things that you buy this year? Your school bag. I got it right before Liv (in college actually) that diaper bags are the best bag for school. Could fit a ton, he had lots of pockets, and most have double shoulder straps (everything needed for my purse). This is perfect and very similar to the one I use still in the hospital, now - is in polyester so sometimes I can clean it with a disinfecting wipe and not worry about damage, has pockets everywhere, and even a crossbody strap. You can launch pad if you want to change, but I always use it as a good laptop sleeve / protector!

A watch is not a necessity in the era of the all-powerful phone, but there will be many times when controlling the phone simply is not appropriate, even if it's only for the moment. This is pretty much my favorite time.

And finally stethoscope. I went a bit 'more to my stethoscope and got a gold, but I like it and I can really take it with murmurs. I made sure to get one that has been seen again. Check with the class of med school before buying as a lot of classes will make a purchase of the group to get a group discount. Sometimes this discount can be quite significant, but sometimes you can find better deals online (like this on Amazon) - just do the comparison for yourself to be sure! Some schools will tell you that you have to buy an otoscope and ophthalmoscope and a blood pressure cuff, etc. etc. do not. I repeat, it is not necessary. You can, if you like, but most of the clinics and hospital rooms will have these readily available in patient rooms. No need to spend hundreds of dollars for them. (And yet, like most of the advice I give, of course, check with your school. Some schools are more strict than others and may actually require you to purchase them. At our age "highly recommended" and I fell in trap) !

At home gel manicure

As you know, I'm a big fan of gel manicure, but in reality they are quite expensive and now I'm working most of the time just to get to the salon can be a struggle. Posted not too long ago about some of my favorite beauty products at home, and I have to give a huge shout to my readers and Los Darianne is recommended that the enamel Gelous manicure at home. Let me tell you how I use (and what else I use it with) and how it has changed the game for my manicure at home!

  1. File and shape nails, wash and dry.
  2. Apply base coat of Gelous polish.
  3. Apply coat of nail color polish.
  4. Apply another coat of Gelous polish.
  5. Apply 2nd coat of nail color polish.
  6. Apply one last coat of Gelous polish.
  7. Top with Seche Vite polish.
As I write it out it sounds like a lot, but I just had no drying time in between coats (only the time it takes to complete both hands). With Seche Vite top coat as my nails I am very dry to the touch within a couple of minutes and completely dry (how can I go to sleep and not wake up in nails destroyed) within a half hour. The best part is that with this routine nail polish really not my last at least two weeks (through all of our hospital hand washing and sanitizing) without chipping at all. Usually after a week I add a fresh coat of Seche Vite to get the shine back, but that's it! I do not think I'll ever get back to gel manicure real now that I understand this routine, yay to save money and still have beautiful looking nails!

PS I'm wearing Essie Case Study in the photo above! One of my favorite nude shades / gray / olive tree which is unfortunately no longer available :(

Organized Bags at every size and price

After recalling my school bag / hospital ideal in my post on back-to-school shopping, a lot of you wanted more recommendations for bags that were a little 'smaller (or larger) and could fit various budgets. So today I mounted a quick guide to some of my favorite bags organized, that size I think is best for what, and an easy solution for organizing any bag!

Bags: small bags crossbody style are perfect for the days you are only carrying what you need for a particular event. Maybe you are only in hospital for the morning and only need a small notebook, stethoscope, mobile phone and other essentials. These bags dimensions are perfect for when you need to bring with you the whole day. From left to right (least expensive to most expensive) is this bag from Target, this Dooney and Bourke classic, and this beautiful bag from Tumi.

Large bags: I think my idea of the way is probably a bit 'larger than some people, but these bags are perfect medium for carrying around most of what you need for a day's work or school - your laptop, planner, dining, and other essentials. Their size is not overwhelming, but can pack almost everything you need. This is usually my go-to bag everyday. From left to right (least expensive to most expensive) is this bag from Fisher Price (yes, now we're getting in diaper bags, but believe me they are fabulous for the organization!), This bag Skip Hop, and this bag of Marc by Marc Jacobs.

Large bags: Now we're getting into really large bags - typically designed for weekend trips and short trips. But if you're the kind of girl who must carry around everything for the most different events during the day, this will be your bag of choice. These bags fit not only your laptop and lunch and anything else you need for the day, but you can also throw in change of clothes and sneakers for the gym where you're heading straight after work. Either you're sneaking away to get a few hours of work but later will be on mother-duty errands with your child for the rest of the day and the need to both mom and baby need. Whatever it is that is preparing the day, these bags of dimensions allow to carry everything you need with you. From left to right (least expensive to most expensive) is this bag from Skip Hop, this cult-classic MZ Wallace, and this bag (my favorite med school) Lo & Sons (it seems to be the 20% now)!

You already have a bag that you love, but could use a little 'more organized? Try buying a purse insert that essentially adds extra pockets for your bag! This fit most tote bags style and is less than $ 40. This is available in bright colors (khaki or red to make it easier to see what's inside it with an internal all-black) and zips closed at the top, and it is $ 50 inserts as these can really make any bag a carry everything organized!

Applying to College

Guys - I'm kind of freaking out; no matter that Liv is turning two in a couple of weeks, but my sister just started her first year of high school this week. I was a teenager by the time my sister was born so I played a huge part in raising, and nothing makes me feel old at this time that the fact that we are having talks about college. In an effort to make my monster mild least help some of you who are pre-pre-med (ie high school!) Or consider the university, I wanted to do a post today about how to apply to college.

Most students do not do the actual application in college until the fall or winter of their senior year, but the planning and work towards this application is done well before! Here are some pointers to guide you throughout the process. I naturally throw the disclaimer that I applied to college a long time ago, so it's always a good idea to get the latest information from websites of schools of interest and your high school guidance counselor. I will also add, however, that sometimes your guidance counselor may not be the most reliable person to listen to, and you should always get advice and help from a number of mentors who can! I highly recommend this book and I'm having my sister to buy it - is about as complete as it gets when it comes to applying to college.
What do you want from college?
The first (and perhaps more difficult) thing to ask yourself is what you want out of college? Do you think you are pursuing nursing or engineering and get a job right out of college? Do you already have plans to get a master's degree or doctorate in art history and works for a museum? Want to go to medical school or law school? Depending on what you might want to do at the end, the type of school you choose to attend may vary. If you plan to work directly out of college, the name of the university and its network diploma really matter. Connections made through your school will be the connections you land your job. This usually means that the school aims for biggest name you can enter. Depending on how local, you want to stay, not to be a typical big name like Stanford or Yale, might simply be whatever "better" school is in your area and where many people in your field graduates. E 'useful to ask your guidance counselor or even the office of career development in the schools you're interested in to a list of alumna if you do not already have an idea. If you are going to continue higher education and application at school after college, your school graduation is still important, of course, but more weight will be placed on what you did in undergrad. I do not mean that students coming from well-known universities have an advantage when it comes to applying to graduate schools, but students from state schools and other lesser-known universities can still be just as effective when it comes to getting acceptances. Unfortunately, what a lot of this comes down to is what you can actually afford - but I always save financial matters for when you actually get accepted to the schools and then choose which one to go to. Never assume a school is out of your financial reach because of its price - many of the more expensive private schools also offer some of the best financial aid and scholarships.

Tiering your schools: "Security, target, and reach"
Once you have a better idea of what you want out of college (and hopefully not just include career goals, but also meet new people, exploring different cultures and backgrounds, trying to figure out who you are, etc.) you can start to come up with a rough list of schools you want to apply to. Before thinking about any limit you want to set for yourself - it's definitely a better idea not to set too many limits, but for many students who choose to be limited geographically. I applied only to universities in New England and I knew I did not want to be farther than a 2 hour drive away from home - that was a big priority for me, but I live in an area where within two hours did limit my options too drastically. Once you know your limits, you can start making your list several levels of schools. Discover admissions websites or guides that provide information about the applicant average accepted - what were their GPA and scores, like, did all participate extracurriculars, and if so what? Knowing this information allows you to get a rough idea of where you fall for the typical applicant admitted that the school - maybe your qualifications are better than average, this would be a school safety for you. Perhaps it fits the average applicant - in this case would be a school of destination. Or maybe it falls a little 'short of the average applicant - this would be a school flow. Some students do not like too many schools to add capacity to their list, but I think especially if you have unique circumstances or history, you really never know how a school will play your accomplishments and you should groped luck and do not sell yourself short.

Become a candidate competitive
GPA: GPA is probably what most students care about and the number of high school students who usually feel they call the most. It goes without saying that a high GPA becomes a more competitive candidate, but there are also a few things to keep in mind. For one, unlike in college where the difficulty course can never be taken by a stranger (ie, no one outside of the college know that BIO 263 is 100 times harder than BIO 279), high school courses are seen as a bit 'more standardized, at least when it comes to AP vs non-AP courses. Colleges like students who challenge themselves, so that a student with a 3.8, but all courses "easy" may not look as impressive as the student with a 3.65 and a handful of AP courses. Now, this does not mean that you should take in more than you can handle, but you should also be looking to challenge themselves. If we start from a school like mine, you can not have many options for AP courses, not a bit 'put you at a disadvantage, but it is hoped that your guidance counselor or a teacher who writes a letter of recommendation can share that information with your schools. The second thing to remember about GPA is the trend that counts. Upward trend is the tendency schools want to see. I almost failed the first year because I was not taking seriously the school. Because of my grades that year I would never be able to bring my cumulative GPA up to something great, even if I had straight 4.0s for the next three years. And I had no right to 4.0s, but certainly done better every year, and it was always 4.0s from the third year.

SAT score: I know least about it has changed so much since I got it. I would like to refer the books on this. Safe to say that you want to score as high as possible, but there are many schools that no longer even require the SAT for admission (Smith - my university - I'm one of them). Recognize the bias and the difference in opportunities facing many students as standardized tests and how can it not be the best indicators of success.

Extracurriculars: Everyone (or almost anyone) can get great grades, when all they have to do is courses. But even if you are playing sports and writing for the newspaper, you are showing the schools that you can balance and have interests outside of your courses, the interest that you could potentially go to college (and thus contribute to their universities)! Now, keep an open mind when it comes to extracurriculars - literally means what to do outside of the curriculum. Because of my responsibilities at home (for example, taking care of my sister and other things at home), I never played sports. I actually never participated in anything requiring regular time commitments outside of normal school hours. But I was active in the National Honor Society (and eventually was president), our Acapella choir, and I can not remember much else. You have to do everything, but you should have at least one extracurricular that you can show you were really involved in a decent chunk of time and to show the commitment and some useful contribution.

Staff: Do not underestimate whatever your personal story is. We all have a story, stories influence what we can do in high school and our perception of "success" a little 'more than others. Use your personal statement as a place to touch some of that - does not make it a sob story or a place excuses, but simply bringing it to the attention not allow any circumstances to be discussed later, if you are invited for an interview (or at least provide some basic information for the numbers to be interpreted with).

I hope this helps to get a start to think college! Later I can maybe do a post on college visits and interviews that will last years! Let me know what else you guys want me to discuss (if anything), this definitely is not my area of "expertise" more, but I still remember being there!

How to Focus

Others who study tips and real strategies, one of the questions that I get quite often is how to stay focused when actually trying to study. I think a lot of what I have to say will sound repetitive to some of you who have read my advice before, but it really boils down to a lot of the same concepts - organize tasks, organize your space and organize your thoughts!

Focus on one thing at a time.
Nothing makes us lose our attention more than trying to do more than one thing at a time. Now, it's smart to plan your block of time more efficiently (and perhaps something will be "cooking" while working on another, see below), but for the most part all of your attention should be on one thing and just one thing . Make a list of what needs to get done, decide what you are going to work on time, and once you do, forget about everything else on this list. When our minds are scattered, we can not think clearly - ever find yourself reading the same page over and over again because you keep "reading", while thinking of the other position he had or what you are going to wear tonight? If he needs to get done, add to the list so you do not forget, but then remove it from your thoughts completely.

Plan your block of time.
Having a good list will help you know what needs to get done and help you prepare for it all as efficiently as possible. Maybe you bake a cake, export file of a hard drive, and prepare a power point presentation. Of course you can work on the presentation for two hours, and then export the file over time that it takes, and then bake the cake and let cool (and spend four or more hours to do it in that order). Alternatively, you could get the cake together and throw it in the oven, start the export file, and work on your presentation, while the export file and the cake is baking and cooling. And do it all done in time more like 2:30. An example of a super simple and obvious, but I hope it illustrates the point that with a little 'of planning you can make better use of your time, yet focused on one main thing (the presentation), but allowing the other in terms time tasks still get done in the background. There is a limit to this multitasking course, so do not try to do too much or else you will end up losing your concentration!

He works in a space of inspiration.
I said it before, but nothing like a space of inspiration to help you focus. For some this is a quiet corner in the library, for others it is a crowded cafe. And still others can work virtually anywhere with a set of headphones and be able to focus (see below for a way to do it). Find what works for you, and realize that the situation could change - sometimes whole "inspiration" is needed is a change of scenery! A clean table is always better, so try and eliminate as much clutter from around you as possible (I am a true believer in space decluttered decluttered = mind)!

Eliminate distractions.
I mention the app self-control before, and this handy plug computer lets you make some websites completely inaccessible for a certain period of time. Unfortunately I do not think that it is compatible with the latest updates to Mac (or, at least, the reviews were from poor) so I did not use - instead I was able to focus only using white noise! For those who would like an app like this, there are some other options that you can read about here (unfortunately I can not weigh any as I've used it myself).

So, for what I use now - I just have the site simply noise on hand on my favorites bar - there are plenty of white noise applications can be downloaded on your phone, but I like this site because it means I can keep the phone away from me while I'm working (and eliminate the temptation to check your Instagram or Twitter). My favorite setting is the pink noise on swing - it just sounds like waves crashing. I plug in headphones and listen to this while working and really be able to focus. Some people swear by real white noise machines, but I find these are the best to keep in their office space, or if you have one in the bedroom for sleeping, not so much on the go (even if this is so small that some of the reviewers mention carry it out with them)! Find what works for you - some people prefer to listen to a rainforest two hours sounds loop on YouTube or classical music, or even hip hop music. Be careful though, if you find yourself singing it is likely that you are not concentrating on your job also how you might be (unless this task does not require much thought).

I also like to go into full screen mode for all that I'm working and really visually focus on one thing at a time. Also be sure to turn off all notifications that would otherwise pop up (messages on my mac, new email notifications, etc.).

Set a timer.
Starting is always the hardest part. Force myself to go to work, sometimes I set a timer for 10 minutes, and say, okay, for these 10 minutes will do absolutely nothing but focus on this task. Although 10 minutes does not seem like much, it is enough to start, and once you're actually working you can continue. Some people like to keep working in this way and to work in targeted blocks of 20 or 30 minutes at a time, taking a quick break to do their other tasks distracting that they put out while they were working. I prefer only the technique of the timer forcing myself to start, and then I usually just keep working.

Take a little break.
Sometimes you just need to take a little 'break to get the juice of the brain flowing again. Especially if I'm working late at night (and at home), I like to take a shower and get a snack (usually something high in protein such as peanut butter and granola), then back to work. Some things that work for others include going out for a short walk or ride (fresh air works wonders) or even taking a break dance music (the transition from white noise some crazy dance tracks leading / motivating for a couple of songs).

Take a great opportunity (for example, take a little 'time to find your purpose).
Sometimes, you need a big break. As a kind of holiday break. Especially when the work gets so crazy and it feels like you've lost control of your program and you do not even know what you're working for ... a break like this it is sometimes exactly what you need. A great opportunity not to be a holiday, can also only be a day to take for themselves and try to remind yourself what your motivations are really in the first place. Maybe it means volunteering at the hospital, or visit family, or even shopping, whatever it is, is what you should do.

I hope this post can help some of you are a bit 'more focus when working!

Fall Booties best

I feel like I do the same place every year at this time - my favorite choices for fall boots! I was not trying to follow any theme, but a clear theme emerged from boots calling my name - tan and fringe!
My favorite pair are these beauties winning Ivanka, are almost always more in love with their light brown leather dark that even enter. If I had the budget and somewhere to take them to (that is, if I do not live in scrubs and clogs) I would probably buy both! The heel is adorable and always makes the heels much more tolerable to wear all day! Although, I must admit, the confidential part of me is still a bit 'nervous to really bring fringe! I like how Caitlin style this pair (option 1 above) in the center of my photo collage, is not it look amazing!? I do not know if I could do it!

The couple most practical I'd probably buy in a heartbeat (and probably will be based on the reviews) are these. They have a chunky heel, rubber sole, and side zipper (key to getting them on / off easily, especially with socks)!

They seem to really like those pictured on the right of my collages on top of this post, and I love how you wear them. She pictured may have a toe that is a bit more pointed, but I can not find the exact pair! Which pair is your favorite?

Gift Ideas for a Two Year Old Girl-peppa pig

It's hard to believe my girl is turning two tomorrow. She's talking nonstop in almost full sentences (her favorite is probably "no mommy not yours, Livi's") and copying every single thing we say and do. Today I'm sharing some gift ideas that would be perfect for any two year old girl!

1. Liv absolutely loves to run around trying to push the stroller. Has a really hard push around our favorite Skoot, and when we use our most lightweight umbrella stroller is so light (and tall for her), she usually almost tips over itself trying to push him! I can not wait to see you use this adorable stroller for dolls / Dogs / Mickie and Minnie - I already know who will be pushing everywhere!

2. Liv birthday comes at a perfect time in which we can only take a lot of new fall and winter clothes for her - absolutely nothing compared to last year it will fit! An adorable coat for the fall as this is ideal for colder temps!

3. A plush exotic. Sure Liv loves his dogs and teddy bears, but I want to have the kind of guy goes around with his laziness. A two year old who knows what a sloth is my kind of two years. This is incredible. So good. I can already see her walking around the neighborhood sloth pushing doll in the stroller.

4. In girls child culture Hispanics get their ears pierced almost immediately after birth (many hospitals do, before going home), and if not certain to 3 months. I was not a fan of it despite insisting of my mother, but Liv has actually started to get really interested in and want to wear earrings herself mom. So 2 (beyond the normal age Hispanic but I am sure that long before the typical American age) we went ahead and got pierced ears Liv (and she has continued to go around showing off her new " eawings "). And 'obviously a choice that is specific to the family, but if you are thinking that I would strongly recommend real gold studs; we went ahead and we got Liv a small set of 10K diamond studs (on sale for $ 100)!

5. bag suitable for their age. I'm not a fan of doing my Liv trying to grow up too soon, but she is obsessed with bags, and always brings my lap. Research grants, most of them are too "grown up" in search, or sparkling and plastered with pictures of Elsa or some other Disney character. This bag is the perfect in between - bright and playful, but still adorable.

6. The so-cute-but-what-are-you-thinking-when-you-decided-on-the-price gift. Flowing clothes that immediately caught my attention, it's just so precious! But then I saw the price - people actually buy this expensive stuff for children 2 years!?! I would not even spend that much on a dress for me even if I could convince myself that I was wearing for years! I entered because it was nice for the collage lol!

My favorite thing ever to 7. So, Liv to do is jump in puddles. I'd almost say he loves rainy days more than sunny ones. We walk around the neighborhood in our rain coats and jump in puddles - initially his snow boots, but now in an old pair of sneakers dirty shirt. But I can not wait to see her in these boots Hunter baby size, she is going to absolutely love them. She'll think she's Peppa Pig.

8. E 'was more difficult than I expected initially to teach Liv Spanish. I try to talk at home when I remember, but no one else in the house speaks Spanish, so she does not hear much conversation. We watch Saturday morning cartoons in Spanish and Pocoyo in Spanish on YouTube, but now following the books much better it is time to get more bilingual board books like this.

9. We just started his potty training, and a toy like this doll potty would be perfect to get her used to the idea of what it's all go potty. Besides, I'm all for supporting the brands that make dolls in all skin tones! His other favorite is for you have had for about a year is its star child that comes in a gorgeous skin color beige.

What kind of gifts do you think are perfect for a 2 year old girl? I'd like to hear your favorites!

Pregnancy Skincare and Makeup very

I was getting a lot of questions lately about my pregnancy skincare and makeup routine so I thought I'd share what I used! I'll start by saying that for the photographs, good lighting and a filter helps always hahaha, my skin does not look that good all the time (especially after a long shift haha)! But I found a routine that works very well for me and may work for some of you too! In this post, click on the images for links product click the link text - and read the reviews! Nearly all the products that I choose for myself I do based on the reviews as they are all supported by tons of happy faces!

Skincare: My skincare routine has not changed much since pre-pregnancy. The largest no-no when it comes to products for the care of the skin during pregnancy are retinoids, which may be teratogenic. Alpha-hydroxy acids (available in chemical peels, but also tons of over-the-counter as well) that include glycolic and lactic acid, can be teratogenic during pregnancy, so many doctors warn against their use as well. Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid, and some super-cautious doctors tell you to stay away from it, but I use it in my face flushed and find who did a great job of keeping my acne at bay. The amount of systemic absorption of any topical product is pretty minimal, even more when it comes to something like a face wash (can you imagine that a cream applied three times a day would probably have more absorption). So I keep away from lotions, peels, etc. that have one of these ingredients. Ok, now that that's out of the way, so use this face wash by Neutrogena and they love it. I use only a third of a pump for each face wash (do not need that much!), Wash gently with your hands (clean) and the hot water, then rinse with cold water (which feels particularly good first thing in the morning ). In AM I then apply this Olay eye cream that is really moisturizing and de-puffing, making sure to dab only lightly on around my eye area. Then I follow with my Holy Grail moisturizer / sunscreen. I do not care if it's dark and rainy outside, do not leave home without this sunscreen on. I'm on my third bottle of it and I think it made a difference in my dark spots. Especially in pregnancy, in which the change in hormones can lead to hyperpigmentation, it is even more important to use a good sunscreen religiously. I follow with my makeup routine (see below). In PM, I wash my face, pat on my eye cream (if they are still half asleep, but this step is skipped the most part), and apply a light moisturizer in the evening - this is my favorite (I am a sucker for products CeraVe, but really are fantastic and not irritating).
Makeup: my makeup routine is done by car. Yes, I am embarrassed to admit that I am that person. I promise I will do so only at traffic lights and drive safely! So, once safely at a stop light, I apply this mineral foundation. I used to be afraid of mineral makeup, but is it really so easy to apply and coverage is wonderfully building - in the days I need very little, I will apply to my problem areas (under my nose that can get red) and melt off, the days I need more I apply lightly all over the face and then blend with a brush. It literally takes the length of a traffic light. Then I apply my concealer under the eyes (another favorite, now I'm on my fourth tube, and are happy to say so many of you have tried it and sing his praise as well)! I just dab a little under my eyes and blend it down to my nose and towards the temples in a sort of triangle. Days that I feel like I need a little 'more I will use my blush, applying to outer two-thirds of my cheeks and the bridge of my nose. I find this gives a more "glowy" as opposed to an "I'm wearing blush" look. I use the shadow Beautiful bronze. Most days I honestly skip this, though, but it will certainly do it if we want to go out to dinner or something. My last step that I never skip is taking care of my eyebrows. I use this pencil eyebrow brush the eyelashes, slightly align the bottom and fill in any gaps, and then brush them and shape them with Brow Gel. I used to think brow gel was silly, but this stuff is the bomb. My eyebrows still looks fantastic for the time I wash my face at night. Another plus that is usually ignored is mascara, but I love this so much - a hand is perfect for the hospital and although it is not waterproof, do not smudge or run - to add a few more hands and have beautiful long lashes for a night.

And that's pretty much the! I hope this post could help to find some products work best for you, but remember that every face is different! What works best for one person may not work at all for someone else. And as always ask your dermatologist if you have skin problems that need issues (my posts are not meant to be medical advice, just a girl to share what works for you)!
